 I think Being Human handled that scene well.  Presents us with something horrific but counterpoints it with something absurd to as you say, break up the tension.

The more I see this the more I love Nina.  She was one of the strongest characters ever on this show.  She didn't deserve the flack she got.

I do like the fact that on the original watch, she would have been seen as woman with an overactive imagination - but as you say, with hindsight it all fits in
